Our story…

Shopfront Studio launched in May 2005 to celebrate and promote creativity, commerce, and community through digital, print, and events.

An idea born from university days in Brighton, when Laura lived in an old off-license on the seafront - the original Studio hosted various exhibitions, performances, and gatherings inspired by a love of shops and their contrasting culture of friendliness and commerce. It sparked an interest that informed her design practice; Laura's degree show was displayed in an old newsagent's stand alongside a bespoke neon 'Open' sign, signalling her love for shopkeeping continues today.

"Shops, kiosks, and stalls have brought people together for centuries. They are important hubs of conversation, connection, commerce, and community that enrich and enliven our towns, cities, and villages. Shops offer a captivating window into a miniature world created by the shopkeeper that the online experience cannot mirror. Nothing compares to stepping inside a warmly lit shop, pottering around the displays, browsing the shelves, picking up bits and bobs as you go, and passing the time of day with a friendly face. Shops are the antidote to our algorithm-driven lives."

Shopfront Studio pays homage to the stories and personalities behind the business facades that remain steadfast visual reminders of our cultural heritage and economic confidence; a drab-looking high street with boarded-up shops signals tough times, whereas a thriving market is consumer confidence in action. Savvy shopkeepers employ all manner of tricks to entice and delight us - the best know-how to put on a show, with supportive players in the persuasive arts: designers, visual merchandisers, marketers, craftspeople, and makers.

Our dedicated Studio is launching in 2024 in Winchester, the creative heart of Hampshire—a platform for work by emerging and established makers who create timeless, functional products for daily life. We have chosen to work with makers who encapsulate the Shopfront ethos, celebrating creativity, craftsmanship and shared history.

This work will accompany a range of smaller gifts and accessories and a selection of relevant books, magazines, and vintage finds. In addition, our site is dedicated to celebrating independent shops and the people behind and within them, offers news, recommendations, and interviews, and provides an opportunity to learn from the best.

Come on in…!
